Middle School Model UN

The YMCA Model United Nations program for middle school students (Y-MUN MS) is a unique Model UN experience that culminates with an annual conference for delegates in grades 6-8.

Our program introduces delegates to the purpose and operations of the United Nations while providing them with an opportunity to actively learn about world cultures and debate issues of international importance. Delegates will actively participate in public speaking, conflict resolution, and coalition building, as well as expose themselves to a vast array of new ideas and new friends!

Rather than mimic other programs that focus strictly on competition, students are encouraged to take ownership in what they collectively produce and to celebrate character development, both of which aim at achieving our ultimate goal: the growth of each participant as a speaker, person, informed world citizen, leader, and collaborator.

Program Structure

Delegates will take part in simulations of

the UN General Assembly and International Criminal Court.

In GA, delegates discuss, draft, debate, and adopt resolutions that address a variety of international issues.

Each delegate serves as a nation’s ambassador and represents their assigned country throughout the session.

In ICC, delegates collaborate in teams to prosecute or defend those accused of genocide, crimes against humanity, or war crimes, as defined by the Rome Statute.

When a team’s case is not being heard, delegates act as judges for the other cases being debated by the ICC.

Volunteer Leadership

Middle School MUN is led by volunteer program directors Caity Battey, Christina Froelich, and Gurpal Sran, all alumni of YMCA Civic Engagement programs.
